Taking Care of Your Pet’s Teeth

Maintaining good dental hygiene is crucial for your pet’s overall health and well-being. Like humans, good dental hygiene can significantly improve your pet’s quality of life and potentially extend their lifespan. Untreated dental disease can lead to structural issues like heart disease, kidney problems, and infections throughout the body. Brushing regularly prevents:

  • Bad Breath: Breath odor is often a sign of underlying dental issues.
  • Tooth decay: Bacteria in the mouth can erode tooth enamel, leading to cavities and pain.
  • Bloody gums: Gum disease can cause inflammation, bleeding, and even tooth loss.

Building the Habit

While brushing your pet’s teeth may seem daunting, building the habit can be simple! Brushing your pet’s teeth typically takes about 30 seconds. Aiming for at least one tooth-brushing session weekly helps reduce tartar buildup. If you notice a buildup between brushings, increase the frequency. If you’ve fallen behind on brushing, consult your veterinarian to get back on track.

Tools

Use toothbrushes and toothpaste designed specifically for pets. Begin brushing your pet’s teeth as soon as possible to create positive associations with the experience. Start with applying toothpaste to just your finger to introduce the routine to your pet. From there, you can gradually transition to a brush. Types of brushes include:

  • Standard toothbrush: Good for durability and reaching larger areas. Recommended for larger dogs.
  • Dual-Headed toothbrush: Features differently sized heads for reaching various areas of the mouth.
  • Finger-Cap brushes: Ideal for anxious pets or those who dislike larger tools. Great for travel.
  • Enzyme toothpaste: helps break down plaque and bacteria, reducing tartar buildup, freshening breath, and promoting overall oral hygiene.

If your pet resists brushing, exploring other dental care options, such as dental chews, wipes, oral sprays or gels, or specially formulated food additives, may be best.
