Daily Canine Enrichment

Enrichment provides both mental and physical stimulation for your pet, which results in a healthier pet overall. Simple things, like feeding with a slow feeder, taking long walks and allowing them to sniff, or throwing the ball are great examples you can do at home. We’ve always been focused on enrichment for our guests and have recently added new experiences, with even more coming soon.

Enrichment Types:

There are 5 types of enrichment:

  • Sensory: Stimulates senses like taste, smell, touch, sound, and sight.
  • Cognitive/Occupational: Stimulates the mind, requiring them to think about how to achieve the goal
  • Nutritional: Encourages natural feeding behaviors
  • Physical: Stimulates physical senses to increase engagement and boost overall health
  • Social: Encourages positive play behaviors and interaction with other pets, as well as encouraging positive relationships between animals and the humans caring for them.

What’s New:

We have enhanced our “Extra” sessions to provide more complex stimulation for our guests. Extra love sessions include activities that focus on soothing or relaxing dogs and cats while stimulating them mentally. Extra Play sessions build on a dog’s skills and challenge them to get out of their normal routine. Our handlers engage with the pet guest during their session, trying different tactics and encouraging them to engage in the activity. This engagement is rewarded with treats, positive feedback, and/or petting. New additions to our line-up include:

 Extra Love

  • Brushing and Massage: Sensory & Social
  • Story Time: Sensory (cuddles, soothing audible sounds) & Social
  • Snuffin’ Tin (Dogs): Nutritional & Cognitive (encourages foraging skill)

Extra Play

These outdoor sports provide fun and Physical Enrichment for dogs

  • Ball pit: Nutritional & Cognitive (encourages foraging skill)
  • Bobbing for tennis balls: Cognitive (how to grab the balls) & Sensory (temperatures and textures)
  • Soccer: Cognitive (how to get the ball from the handler)
  • Flirt Pole: Cognitive (object tracking/how to catch the flirt pole)

Watch for more updates in future newsletters as we roll out additions.
